Amazon India has announced plans to deploy nearly 1,000 electric trucks across the country in collaboration with Eicher Trucks and Buses, the commercial vehicle division of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV). The move marks one of the largest dedicated electric truck deployments in India’s e-commerce and quick commerce sectors.
The electric fleet will support operations for Amazon Now, the company’s ultra-fast delivery service, while strengthening Amazon’s push towards building a more sustainable transportation ecosystem in India.
As part of the partnership, VECV has developed the Eicher Pro-X electric small truck specifically for high-frequency intra-city logistics operations. Designed for e-commerce and quick commerce applications, these compact electric trucks will transport goods between Amazon’s fulfilment centres located on city outskirts and micro-fulfilment centres positioned closer to customers.
Amazon has already inducted around 50 Eicher Pro-X electric trucks into its logistics network and plans to scale the fleet to more than 1,000 units by 2028. The trucks are expected to cover approximately 100–180 km daily while handling multiple trips between facilities. Amazon states that the vehicles can achieve fast charging in nearly 50 minutes, improving operational uptime for rapid deliveries.
The rollout will initially focus on major cities, including Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, supporting Amazon Now’s rapid expansion across India. The company recently announced plans to extend the service to 100 cities and establish more than 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres nationwide. Upcoming expansion markets include Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Mangalore, and Visakhapatnam.
Abhinav Singh, Vice President – Operations, Amazon India and Australia, said the company has consistently focused on sustainable mobility solutions and already operates over 12,000 electric vehicles across India.
He added, “We work closely with multiple OEM partners to build solutions suited to our needs, and are integrating electric transportation more deeply as we grow. The planned deployment of around 1,000 purpose-built Volvo Eicher electric trucks is yet another step in that direction.”
SS Gill, Chief Commercial Officer at VECV, highlighted that the Eicher Pro-X electric truck was co-developed with Amazon to meet the specific requirements of e-commerce logistics operations.
“The deployment of Eicher Pro X electric trucks marks a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainable mobility. This partnership-led approach ensures that we are not only delivering electric vehicles, but also enabling efficient, reliable, and scalable logistics solutions,” he said.
Amazon and VECV have reportedly been working together since 2022 to develop electric commercial vehicles tailored for India’s e-commerce sector. In 2025, Amazon had already deployed more than 100 electric trucks from multiple OEMs across cities such as Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
The ecommerce giant continues to be among the early adopters of electric mobility in India, with over 12,500 EVs already deployed across more than 500 cities for both last-mile and middle-mile logistics operations.
