Volvo Buses India, a business unit of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), has expanded its premium coach portfolio with the launch of the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper at Prawaas 5.0 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Developed for both short- and long-distance operations, the new premium coach combines luxury seating and sleeper berths on a single platform, offering greater flexibility for intercity, tourism and pilgrimage operators.
The launch comes at a time when India’s premium bus travel segment is witnessing growing demand for higher comfort, enhanced safety and operational efficiency. Built on Volvo’s globally proven coach platform, the new 9600 Seater-Sleeper is tailored to the evolving needs of Indian fleet operators and delivers the premium travel experience the brand is known for.
Speaking at the launch, S S Gill, Chief Commercial Officer, VE Commercial Vehicles, said the Indian bus industry is rapidly evolving, with passengers demanding more luxurious travel experiences while operators seek higher productivity and better operational efficiency. He added that the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper strengthens the company’s premium coach portfolio with a flexible solution focused on safety, comfort and luxury.
Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President – Bus Division, VE Commercial Vehicles, said the new coach builds upon the success of the Volvo 9600 platform by offering operators a versatile configuration that caters to both short- and long-distance routes without compromising passenger comfort.
The 15-metre coach is powered by Volvo’s VEDX8 diesel engine paired with the I-Shift automated transmission. It accommodates 51 passengers, featuring 21 upper-deck sleeper berths, 27 premium lower-deck reclining seats with calf support, and three rear sleeper berths, along with a generous 6 cubic metres of luggage space for long-distance operations.
Inside, the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper receives refreshed interiors with premium mood lighting, upgraded sleeper berths, ergonomic seating, mobile charging ports, entertainment provisions, privacy features, an integrated kitchenette, and an onboard washroom, creating a more comfortable travel experience for passengers.
The biggest highlight of the new coach is its comprehensive suite of advanced safety technologies. It becomes one of the first coaches in India to offer a 360-degree camera system, Camera Monitor System (electronic mirrors), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Driver State Monitoring System, and an Alcohol Interlock System, significantly improving driver awareness and passenger safety.
The coach is equipped with an advanced telematics solution that gives operators real-time information on vehicle location, fuel consumption, speed, performance, and operational alerts, helping improve fleet management and overall efficiency.
With the launch of the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper, Volvo Buses India continues to strengthen its leadership in the premium coach segment by combining world-class engineering, advanced safety technologies and passenger-focused innovation for India’s growing intercity transport market.
