Mercedes AMG has introduced the new SL 55 in India, starting at a price of Rs 2.35 crore (ex-showroom, India). The roadster offers a 2+2 seating arrangement and features a fabric roof. It is being imported as a completely built unit (CBU).
As the seventh-generation model, the SL effectively replaces the S-Class cabriolet, AMG GT Roadster, and the sixth-generation SL in Mercedes’ global lineup. Notably, the SL also marks the return of the ’55’ designation to a Mercedes-AMG model, with the G55 SUV being the last one before production ended in 2012.
Under the hood, the new SL 55 roadster is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine generating 476hp and 700Nm of torque. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes’ 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. The SL 55 boasts impressive performance figures, including a 0-100kph acceleration time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 295kph. The car also features standard rear axle steering.
In terms of dimensions, the SL 55 has grown in size compared to its predecessor, measuring 4,705mm in length, 1,915mm in width, and 1,359mm in height. The wheelbase has been extended by 117mm to accommodate the rear seats. The exterior design showcases distinctive elements such as the large Panamericana front grille, angular LED headlights, elongated bonnet with power domes, raked windscreen, quad exhausts, and 20-inch alloy wheels as standard.
The new SL introduces a triple-layer fabric roof, which is 21kg lighter than the previous metal roof. The roof can be opened or closed in 16 seconds at speeds of up to 60kph. Three color options are available for the fabric roof: Black, Dark red, and Grey. Buyers can choose from eight exterior paint shades, including Obsidian black, Selenite grey, Hyper blue, Alpine grey, Opalite white bright, Spectral blue magno, Patagonia red bright, and Monza grey magno.
Inside the cabin, the SL 55 adopts Mercedes’ latest design language, featuring an 11.9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen with adjustable angles. It runs on the latest MBUX operating system and offers various display options, including AMG and soft-top modes. The touchscreen is accompanied by a 12.3-inch LCD driver display and an optional heads-up display. The interior upholstery options include Black Nappa leather, Sienna brown Nappa leather, Truffle brown Nappa leather, and Black Nappa leather with microfiber accents, each with different stitching options. The car also offers two interior trim options, aluminum and carbon fiber, as well as a choice between AMG sports seats and AMG performance seats. Additional features include a Burmester sound system, Airscarf function, and the optional AMG Track Pace program for track data recording.
