Lexus Unveils LBX

Lexus has unveiled its smallest crossover SUV, the LBX, which will initially be available for sale in Europe. Designed specifically for the European market, the LBX shares the TNGA-B platform with the European-spec Yaris Cross SUV from Toyota. It will compete with rivals such as the Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3.

The LBX is equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain, consisting of a three-cylinder petrol engine and a single electric motor. Together, they deliver up to 136hp to the front wheels. The powertrain features a new bipolar nickel-metal-hydride battery with improved power density and throughput potential, enabling the LBX to offer acceleration comparable to battery-electric cars.

To ensure a Lexus-like driving experience, the TNGA-B platform was modified for the LBX, with a 20mm longer wheelbase, reduced overhangs, and widened track. The LBX measures 4,190mm in length, 1,825mm in width, and 1,545mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,580mm.

Inside the LBX, the focus is on the driver, with a lower seating position than most crossovers. The dashboard and center console have been simplified, while retaining key physical controls. Standard equipment includes a 9.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 12.3-inch digital instrument display.

Lexus aims for the LBX to make up a significant portion of its sales in Europe when deliveries commence in the first quarter of 2024.
