Ather has recently announced the launch of a new low-cost variant of its electric scooter called the 450S. This model is based on the 450 platform. The starting price for the 450S is Rs 1.3 lakh (ex-showroom)

While not much information is available about the 450S, a teaser image of the handlebar has been released by Ather. The company has revealed that the scooter will have a top speed of 90 km/h, matching the 450X. However, there is no information about its acceleration timings, so it remains uncertain if it will be as quick as the 450X. The range of the 450S is lower compared to the 450X, with an IDC range of 115 km, which is a little over 20 percent less than the certified range of 146 km on the 450X. This reduction in range is due to the smaller battery capacity of 3 kWh, compared to 3.7 kWh on the 450X. Assuming similar levels of efficiency, the ‘TrueRange’ of the 450S should be slightly over 80 km.

The lower pricing of the 450S is attributed to the smaller battery pack. It is priced at around Rs 15,000 less than the 450X, which ranges between Rs 1.45 and 1.49 lakh (ex-showroom, after FAME-II subsidy). However, in states where additional subsidies are applicable, the 450X can cost as little as Rs 1.27 lakh. The 450S will also benefit from these state subsidies, potentially bringing its price down to as low as Rs 1.1 lakh in cities like Ahmedabad.

Based on the teaser image, it appears that Ather may have made cost-cutting efforts in areas beyond the battery pack. The mirror stalks on the 450S have a simpler design compared to the premium units on the 450X. Additionally, design patents indicate that Ather is working on passenger footpegs for the 450S, which are not present on the 450X. These folding footpegs have not been implemented on the 450X yet, so it is possible that they will make their debut on the 450S.

Bookings for the Ather 450S will open in July, although the company has not provided any information regarding delivery timelines.
