Volkswagen Group, in partnership with Cerence Inc, has confirmed at CES 2024 that it will integrate ChatGPT into some of its global cars and SUVs. The collaboration ensures that current models based on MEB and MQB EVO platforms will have access to automotive-grade ChatGPT integration, with a focus on protecting personal data by preventing ChatGPT from accessing vehicle information.

Volkswagen showcased its initial vehicles featuring the AI-based chatbot ChatGPT at CES 2024, integrated into its IDA voice assistant. Starting from the second quarter of 2024, VW aims to make ChatGPT a standard feature in many production vehicles, becoming the first mass-market manufacturer to do so. The integration is part of the latest infotainment systems available in MEB-based models like ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.3, as well as the MQB EVO platform lineup, including the new Tiguan, current-gen Passat, and Golf.

The IDA voice assistant, powered by ChatGPT, allows users to control infotainment, navigation, and air conditioning, as well as seek information through natural language interaction, enhancing the hands-free driving experience. Notably, ChatGPT does not access any vehicle data, ensuring privacy by immediately deleting questions and answers.

While the rollout is global, there is no information on when this technology might be introduced in Volkswagen India models. As of now, Volkswagen India doesn’t offer vehicles based on MQB EVO or MEB platforms, making the integration’s availability in the country uncertain.
