Intercity mobility platform zingbus has outlined rapid progress in its highway electrification journey, positioning its operator-led, asset-light EV model as a scalable alternative to traditional company-owned fleet strategies. Riding on growing traveller preference for electric coaches on highways, the company is now targeting over 1,000 electric buses in the coming years, with the potential to neutralise more than 36,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Departing from the conventional Company-Owned, Company-Operated (COCO) model, zingbus has adopted a partnership-driven approach that enables bus operators to own and run electric buses, while the platform supports them with revenue management, service delivery and a proprietary EV-focused technology stack. This structure aligns incentives across stakeholders, reduces financial strain on operators and allows zingbus to scale without the burden of asset ownership.
With over 250 operators already onboarded, zingbus has built one of India’s largest distributed partner ecosystems in the intercity segment. The company notes that for more than 90 percent of Indian bus operators, the challenge in EV adoption is not capability but access to the right ecosystem. Its customised EV operating system is designed to simplify this transition, lowering entry barriers and minimising upfront commitments.
Early performance indicators underscore the model’s effectiveness. zingbus’ electric coaches are reporting higher occupancy levels and stronger Net Promoter Scores (NPS) compared to their ICE counterparts on the same routes, highlighting a clear behavioural shift among travellers in favour of electric intercity travel.
Commenting on the strategy, Prashant Kumar, Co-founder, zingbus, said, “Our operator partners are keen to go electric. By equipping them with an EV-ready operating system, we are not just adding electric buses, but enabling a new growth curve for intercity mobility. The highways of the future will be electric, and they will be built through partnerships, not centralisation.”
With a partner-first philosophy, asset-light expansion strategy and technology backbone built for long-haul EV operations, zingbus is positioning itself as a key enabler of clean, reliable and economically viable electric travel on India’s highways.
