Mahindra & Mahindra has achieved a major manufacturing milestone with its state-of-the-art Chakan facility rolling out its three millionth vehicle. Marking the occasion was the Mahindra BE 6, the company’s flagship electric SUV, highlighting the plant’s evolution into a future-ready manufacturing hub for both internal combustion and electric vehicles.
Operational since December 2009, the Chakan facility has rapidly scaled production, reaching its latest one million vehicles in just 27 months—almost four times faster than it took to produce its first million units.
Spread across 657 acres, the plant manufactures 19 vehicle models and over 450 variants, catering to passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and Mahindra’s growing EV portfolio. It also serves international markets, exporting vehicles to countries including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
The Chakan facility integrates Industry 4.0 technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G connectivity, advanced robotics and digital traceability. Nearly 1,500 robots, over 98% automation in the body shop, AI-enabled safety monitoring and flexible multi-model assembly lines contribute to higher efficiency and world-class quality standards.
Sustainability remains a key focus, with more than half of the facility’s energy requirements met through renewable sources, while EV production operates entirely on renewable energy. The plant is also water positive, Zero Waste to Landfill certified, and continues progressing towards its energy productivity goals.
With this achievement, Mahindra reinforces Chakan’s position as one of India’s most advanced automotive manufacturing facilities and a cornerstone of its global production strategy.
