Mini has unveiled the third-generation Countryman SUV, which will include an all-electric variant, with production and sales set to begin overseas next year.

Countryman

Compared to its predecessor, the third-gen Countryman is larger, boasting a 60mm increase in height and a 130mm extension in length. This expansion is part of Mini’s strategy to introduce a slightly smaller Mini Aceman SUV, positioned below the Countryman. Mini aims to attract new customers with the larger Countryman while providing current Mini owners with a more practical option compared to the Cooper hatchback, all while maintaining the Mini identity.

Countryman

The new Countryman features an updated exterior design, including elements seen in the latest Cooper models, such as the octagonal front grille, redesigned headlights, tail lights, and reworked C-pillar treatment. Inside, the cabin follows a minimalist design akin to the Cooper, with a prominent touchscreen on the dashboard. The increased size of the SUV allows for an enlarged center console, more substantial cupholders, and an additional 130mm of legroom in the rear. The rear seat backrests are now adjustable in six positions, and there’s improved boot space of 460/1,450 liters, along with storage space for the EV version’s charging cables. Both ICE (internal combustion engine) and EV versions will offer various interior trims and eight Mini Experience modes.Notably, the Countryman will be the first Mini to feature Level 2 autonomous driver assistance systems, including semi-autonomous driving at speeds up to 60kph.

Regarding electric powertrains, Mini will offer two options: the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive Countryman E with 204hp and 250Nm of torque, and the dual-motor, four-wheel-drive Countryman SE All4 with 313hp and 494Nm of torque. The former can accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 8.6 seconds with a top speed of 170kph, while the latter achieves 0-100kph in just 5.6 seconds and has a top speed of 180kph. Both variants come with a 66.45kWh battery, providing official ranges of 462km and 433km, respectively, and can be rapid-charged at rates of up to 130kW.

Additional powertrain options include petrol engines, including a 169hp 1.5-litre turbocharged triple for the Countryman C, and a 218hp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (shared with the BMW X1) for the S All4. The John Cooper Works (JCW) All4 variant boasts the same 2.0-liter unit tuned to produce 300hp and 400Nm, achieving a claimed 0-100kph time of 5.4 seconds. Mini has also confirmed the availability of a diesel engine in select markets, although specific details have not been disclosed.  The new Mini Countryman is expected to launch in India next year.
