Tata Motors introduced eco-friendly commercial fleet to Tata Steel

Tata Motors, India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, initiated a significant step towards sustainable transportation by introducing its latest fleet of eco-friendly commercial vehicles to Tata Steel. The lineup includes the innovative Prima tractors, tippers, and the Ultra EV bus, all powered by cutting-edge Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and battery electric technologies. The ceremonial flag-off of these vehicles took place in Jamshedpur as part of the Tata Group’s Founder’s Day celebrations, with Tata Sons Chairman, Mr. N Chandrasekaran, officiating the event. Notable dignitaries including Mr. T V Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, and Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, were present alongside their respective leadership teams.

Reflecting on the enduring partnership between Tata Motors and Tata Steel, T. V. Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, emphasized, “This delivery marks another significant milestone in our long-standing partnership with Tata Motors. As leaders in our respective industries, Tata Steel and Tata Motors share a common vision for sustainability and innovation.” He highlighted the collaborative efforts aimed at revolutionizing industries and leading in environmental responsibility, stressing their commitment to driving positive change and delivering eco-friendly solutions.

Addressing the futuristic capabilities of the vehicles, Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, stated, “Tata Motors is driving the global megatrend of sustainable, safe, and smart mobility in India. Our green fleet of commercial vehicles will accelerate Tata Steel’s efforts towards making its supply chain carbon neutral.” He emphasized the collaboration’s holistic approach in enhancing functionality, performance, connectivity, and safety, tailored to diverse duty cycles and special applications. Mr. Wagh expressed anticipation for further strengthening the historic partnership in reducing carbon footprint and achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.

The newly introduced Tata Motors fleet boasts advanced safety features including the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), Electronic Stability Control, Active Traction Control, and Driver Monitoring System, ensuring enhanced safety for drivers and cargo alike. These vehicles, designed for a range of applications, were handed over to Tata Steel’s delivery partners for transportation purposes.

The Tata Prima LNG range, comprising Tippers (3530.K) and Tractors (5530.S), caters to surface mining and long-haul commercial transportation needs. Additionally, Tata Steel will deploy the 28T EV Tipper (E28.K) and 46T EV Tractor (E46.S) to assess real-world performance as part of its logistics operations, accelerating the adoption of battery-electric technology. The company will also introduce Tata Ultra EV buses for employee transport across its plant locations.

Tata Motors has been at the forefront of developing innovative mobility solutions powered by alternate fuel technologies, including battery electric, CNG, LNG, Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine, and Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology. Demonstrating its commitment, Tata Motors showcased a wide range of alternate-fuel powered commercial vehicles at Auto Expo 2023 and Bharat Mobility Global Expo in February 2024. The company’s track record includes supplying over 2,000 electric buses across multiple Indian cities, accumulating more than 12 crore kilometres with an uptime of over 95%.
