Marking World EV Day, Vedanta Limited (NSE: VEDL), one of India’s leading players in critical minerals, energy transition metals, and technology, announced a major push towards strengthening the EV ecosystem with a capex spend exceeding ₹12,500 crore. The investment is directed at expanding capacity across aluminium, zinc, ferrochrome, and steel—materials that are critical for electric mobility.

Vedanta’s aluminium portfolio, including primary foundry alloys, billets for battery casings, HVAC systems, and EV frames, plays a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability for automakers. The company has also pioneered low-carbon ‘green’ aluminium under the Restora brand, furthering India’s transition to cleaner mobility.

Aluminium’s lightweight properties help extend EV range by offsetting battery weight. Research indicates that every 100 kg reduction in vehicle weight can improve EV driving range by 10–15%.

Zinc is another major focus area, with Vedanta producing special high-grade zinc and green zinc (EcoZen), both vital for corrosion resistance in Body-in-White (BIW) applications and zinc-based die-casting alloys for automotive components. Zinc is also being explored as an alternative to lithium-based batteries.

In addition, Vedanta is India’s sole primary producer of nickel—a critical element for EV battery systems. The company also supplies copper, which is indispensable in EV batteries, motors, charging systems, and wiring harnesses. Together, these metals provide automakers with a reliable domestic supply chain.

Highlighting customer partnerships, TVS Motors and Tata Steel praised Vedanta’s aluminium and zinc products for driving performance, sustainability, and innovation in the automotive sector.

Beyond its current portfolio, Vedanta is eyeing expansion into rare earths, graphite, vanadium, manganese, and tungsten to strengthen the EV value chain further.

With this aggressive investment and expanded capabilities, Vedanta aims to position itself as a cornerstone of India’s clean mobility and EV revolution.
