Tata Motors Signs MoU with GEMS to Deliver 100 Magna EV Intercity Coaches, Showcases Next-Gen Electric Mobility at Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0

Tata Motors, India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green Energy Mobility Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (GEMS)—the EV arm of Universal Bus Services (UBS)—to supply 100 Magna EV intercity coaches. The signing took place at the Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 in Chennai, where Tata Motors is showcasing its cutting-edge commercial passenger mobility offerings.

This strategic agreement signals a major leap toward decarbonising long-distance travel in South India. The Magna EV, Tata’s fully electric intercity coach, is designed to deliver a superior travel experience with up to 300 km range, 44-seater configuration, and advanced safety features like Electronic Braking System (EBS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

A Strong Push for Clean Mobility

The MoU signing was graced by Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, Hon’ble Minister for Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu, alongside officials from the state government and the All Omni Bus Owners Association (AOBOA). Commending the initiative, Dr. Rajaa remarked,

“Tata Motors’ partnership with UBS is a defining move towards a cleaner, safer, and future-ready transport ecosystem in Tamil Nadu. These EV coaches represent our commitment to sustainable public transportation and industrial innovation.”

GEMS, the newly formed electric mobility arm of UBS, will spearhead the deployment of these buses and the associated charging infrastructure. UBS, a trusted name in South India’s premium intercity travel segment, is positioning GEMS at the forefront of the clean mobility transformation.

Driving the Future of Intercity Travel

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sunil Kumar Ravindran, Managing Partner, Universal Bus Services and Director, GEMS, said:

“This MoU is a significant milestone in our transition to electric intercity mobility. The Tata Magna EV is not just about zero-emissions—it’s about quieter, smoother rides and an overall elevated travel experience.”

Echoing this vision, Mr. Anand S, Vice President and Head – Commercial Passenger Vehicle Business, Tata Motors, added:

“The Magna EV is the result of deep customer insights and rigorous validation. With this partnership, we’re not just delivering buses—we’re helping reshape the future of intercity transport with clean, connected, and cost-efficient mobility solutions.”

Equipped with Fleet Edge, Tata’s intelligent connected vehicle platform, these EVs offer real-time diagnostics, tracking, and fleet optimisation—ensuring operational efficiency and enhanced passenger service.

This MoU not only underlines Tata Motors’ commitment to sustainable transport but also sets the stage for a greener, more efficient intercity travel network in India. As GEMS and UBS begin rolling out these electric coaches, passengers can look forward to cleaner, quieter, and smarter journeys across South India.
