Sterling Tools Limited, a leader in automotive components and Motor Control Units (MCUs), through its subsidiary Sterling Gtake (SGEM), has entered into a Technology Licensing Agreement with UK-based Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) Ltd to develop and manufacture Rare Earth Magnet-Free traction motors for electric vehicles at its Faridabad facility.
This patented AEM technology allows SGEM to produce magnet-free motors that deliver top-tier performance without size or weight compromises, providing a reliable alternative to China-dependent permanent magnet supply chains. This move aligns with the growing EV traction motor market in India, projected to reach approximately ₹15,000 crore by 2030. The partnership also includes joint development of integrated motor and controller solutions.
By manufacturing these motors locally, Sterling Tools aims to boost import substitution and strengthen India’s EV component supply chain under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, fostering a self-reliant automotive ecosystem.
Anil Aggarwal, Chairman of Sterling Tools Limited, said, “Our entry into Rare Earth Magnet-Free motors reflects our commitment to leading technological innovation and supporting the EV industry’s evolving needs. We are expanding our capabilities to offer integrated motor and controller solutions while enhancing local manufacturing. This partnership positions us to contribute significantly to India’s sustainable mobility future.”
Dr. James Widmer, CEO of Advanced Electric Machines, added, “Partnering with Sterling Tools enables us to bring our proven magnet-free motor technology to India’s burgeoning EV market. Together, we aim to support India’s emission reduction goals and self-reliance ambitions with high-quality, innovative powertrain solutions.”
