Volkswagen Virtus rules the mid-size sedan space

The sedan segments in India have been shrinking. The mid-size sedan segment also has also been seeing tough times with the advent of SUVs and their rise.

However, there is a sizeable number of sedan lovers in the country, who still remain loyal to this body style. While there are a few players in this segment, some of whom have been dominating it for long, one brand that has recently taken pole position and  literally driving this segment, is the Volkswagen Virtus.

Volkswagen Virtus

The Virtus has always been a no-nonsense, well-built, spacious and safe vehicle. It is due to the efforts by Volkswagen and also the acceptance by car buyers that the Vietus has emerged as a favourite and has been ruling this segment for several months now. The Virtus has de-throned the Hyundai Verna, the earlier leader and is now selling in much higher numbers.

The YTD (Jan-Jul 2025) sales numbers of the Virtus is recorded at 13,853 units, which contributes to 33% of the segment share, which is almost 1/3rd. There has been a 9% growth ( YTD) for the Virtus, which is commendable. The segment size is 37,575 (Jan-Jul 2025).

The Hyundai Verna has been leading previously, but its sales have been dwindling this year, averaging at about 1000 units per month. Last 3 months have seen only triple digit figures.
The Skoda Slavia has been consistent while the Honda City has been falling to aproximately 600-700 units monthly in 2025.

While the Virtus holds its fort, I think an update to the car in terms of features and also some sprucing up will certainly give it a boost and sustain its leadership in the segment.
