Toyota Hilux Champ makes global debut

Toyota has unveiled the all-new Hilux Champ pickup, marking its debut on the recently introduced IMV 0 platform. Initially launched in Thailand, the Hilux Champ will later expand its availability to markets such as Indonesia, Africa, and South America.

As the second addition to Toyota’s Hilux brand, the Hilux Champ offers customization with up to 10 configurations, allowing buyers to tailor the vehicle according to their preferences through third-party car body-builders. Positioned as an affordable alternative to the larger and pricier Hilux, the Champ targets customers seeking a more compact option.

Originally showcased as the IMV 0 concept at the Japan Mobility Show and the Toyota Rangga concept in Indonesia, the Hilux Champ addresses the demand for customizable vehicles, particularly in the Philippines.

The Hilux Champ comes with three powertrain options. The 2.4-litre diesel engine produces 150hp and is available with either a 5-speed manual (350Nm torque) or a 6-speed automatic (400Nm torque). Additionally, there are two naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engines—a 2.0-litre unit with 130hp and 183Nm, and a 2.7-litre unit generating 166hp and 245Nm of torque. Both petrol engines offer a choice between a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. There are also discussions about introducing a strong hybrid petrol option in certain markets.

Offering versatility, the Hilux Champ comes in two wheelbase options. The SWB version measures 4.9 meters in length, 1.8 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height, with a 2,750mm wheelbase. On the other hand, the LWB version is 5.3 meters long, shares the same width and height as the SWB variant, and features a longer 3,085mm wheelbase. Both versions provide a ground clearance of 180mm.

While there is no official confirmation regarding the Hilux Champ’s availability in India, the IMV 0 platform, designed for developing markets, may lead to an affordable version of the Fortuner. Rumors suggest that the Hilux Champ might eventually arrive in India, with the SUV derivative anticipated to hit the market approximately a year after the pickup’s launch in the country.
