Tata Motors’ electric subsidiary, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM), has commenced electric vehicle production at its newly acquired Sanand facility in Gujarat. Acquired from Ford India on January 10, 2023, the facility spans 460 acres. The retooling process took a year, during which Tata Motors continued manufacturing the Nexon at the plant. The facility is now equipped to produce electric vehicles, including the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV, with the upcoming Punch EV set to be launched on January 17.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited & Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, stated that the new Sanand plant unlocks a state-of-the-art manufacturing capacity of 3,00,000 units per annum, scalable to 4,20,000 units per annum. The facility has the flexibility to produce both petrol and diesel vehicles as needed. It comprises four main shops—Stamping, Body construction, Paint, and Final assembly shop—equipped with high levels of automation. Multiple technological upgrades have been implemented in various areas, including the press, weld, paint, and assembly shop.

Currently employing over 1,000 staff and technicians, the plant plans to create an additional 1,000 jobs in the next 3 to 4 months as production ramps up. The facility boasts a 50KW solar rooftop and aims to be water positive by December 2024. Tata Motors is also preparing to introduce electric versions of the Harrier and the upcoming Curvv coupe-SUV, scheduled to be available later this year.
