Kia – The quickest carmaker to reach 1 million domestic sales

Kia becomes the quickest carmaker to reach 1 million domestic sales.

Kia India, marking its fifth year in the country, has reached a significant milestone by achieving 1 million unit sales in the domestic market. The company, recognized as the fastest-growing premium carmaker in India, accomplished this feat within just 59 months of starting operations. The Kia Seltos, the brand’s flagship model, has played a pivotal role, contributing over 48% of total domestic sales. Following closely are the Sonet and Carens, which account for 34% and 16% of Kia India’s domestic dispatches, respectively.

Since its launch in 2019, Kia has revolutionized the Indian automotive industry with its advanced technology and innovative designs, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after car brands in the country. Kia India has defied the notion that India is a primarily cost-conscious market, with 42% of its sales coming from top-tier trims. The company has also fostered the adoption of automatic and modern transmission technologies in India. Currently, Kia India offers three automatic transmissions—IVT, 6AT, and 7DCT—accounting for 32% of its sales. The Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) introduced with the Sonet in 2020 contributes 15% to domestic sales, while the company maintains a 59:41 Petrol to Diesel sales ratio.

Reflecting on this achievement, Mr. Joonsu Cho, Chief Sales Officer of Kia India, stated, “We have consistently reached milestones since our launch, and doing so in such a diverse and competitive market is especially meaningful. Achieving 1 million domestic sales underscores our commitment to the Indian market and the trust our customers have placed in us, making us one of the most beloved carmakers in the country.”

He added, “Kia is synonymous with innovation. Our cutting-edge technology, design, and in-car features continually challenge established norms, both in India and globally. This year, we will introduce our global flagship models in India, followed by a new homegrown model that will reinforce our innovative approach. India is a dynamic market for automotive companies, and with our aspirational products and services, we aim to be a key driver of growth in the Indian automotive industry.”

Kia India began with an annual sales volume of 45,226 units in 2019, which grew to 140,505 units in 2020, 181,583 units in 2021, and 254,556 units in 2022. Last year, the brand further solidified its presence with 255,000 units sold. In the first seven months of 2024, Kia has sold nearly 1.5 lakh units in the domestic market, indicating strong momentum heading into the festive season. The brand has also expanded its footprint with a network of 588 touchpoints across 256 cities in India.

India is a crucial Kia Corporation export base, with over 2.6 lakh units shipped to more than 100 international markets. Kia India’s total sales and exports have reached nearly 1.3 million units.
