UP Sets the Standard in Helmet Safety: 2WHMA Calls for Nationwide Action Against Fake Helmets
The Two-Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association of India (2WHMA) has applauded the Uttar Pradesh government’s decisive crackdown on counterfeit BIS-certified helmets, calling it a benchmark for road safety enforcement nationwide.

Following a sharp rise in road accidents, with over 46,000 incidents and 24,000 deaths reported in the state last year—the UP Transport Department has intensified helmet safety checks. The new directive mandates FIRs against offenders and public awareness campaigns to ensure only genuine BIS-compliant helmets are used on roads.
Rajeev Kapur, President of 2WHMA and MD of Steelbird Helmets, hailed the initiative as a “monumental step” toward saving lives:
“Uttar Pradesh has taken strong action against substandard helmets that pose serious risks to riders. This move sets a powerful precedent for other states. We commend CM Yogi Adityanath and Transport Commissioner BN Singh for leading the way.”
Kapur emphasized that poor-quality helmets continue to endanger lives across India and that a joint effort by the government, industry, and citizens is essential to enforce quality standards.

“Road safety must become a national priority. We urge all states to follow UP’s lead and take urgent steps to eliminate fake helmets from the market,” he added.
2WHMA believes this bold move by Uttar Pradesh could spark a larger movement toward mandatory BIS compliance across India, potentially reducing thousands of avoidable fatalities every year.
