BYD Showcases DM-i Hybrid Technology in India

BYD India has unveiled its globally acclaimed DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology in the country, marking a significant step in its strategy to expand sustainable mobility solutions for Indian consumers. The technology, which is expected to be introduced in upcoming BYD models, offers a combined driving range of more than 1,200 km while delivering an electric-first driving experience.

Positioned as a bridge between conventional internal combustion engine vehicles and pure battery electric vehicles, BYD’s DM-i technology combines the benefits of electric mobility with the convenience of extended-range capability. Unlike traditional hybrid systems that rely primarily on the petrol engine, DM-i adopts an electric-first approach where the battery and electric motor remain the primary source of propulsion for most daily driving scenarios.

The system intelligently switches between multiple operating modes depending on driving conditions and energy requirements. In EV Mode, the vehicle operates entirely on electric power, making it ideal for city commutes and everyday driving. In HEV Series Mode, the petrol engine functions as a generator to charge the battery while the electric motor powers the wheels. During higher-speed or high-load situations, HEV Parallel Mode allows the engine to directly assist in propulsion alongside the electric motor.

Speaking about the technology, Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business at BYD India, said that DM-i is designed to make sustainable mobility more practical and accessible by combining electric driving for daily use with the flexibility required for long-distance travel.

At the heart of the system is BYD’s highly efficient 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine, which delivers a claimed thermal efficiency of 43.04 percent. Working in conjunction with high-speed electric motors and BYD’s advanced hybrid control systems, the powertrain is engineered to optimize efficiency, performance, and driving refinement.

Six Key Advantages of BYD DM-i Technology

Fast: Performance-oriented setup with claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 5.5 seconds.

Efficient: Fuel consumption of 4.8 litres per 100 km under NEDC testing conditions.

Quiet: Enhanced NVH levels deliver a refined driving experience comparable to electric vehicles.

Smooth: Instant torque delivery and seamless power transitions provide EV-like driving characteristics.

Green: Prioritizes electric driving to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

Safe: Equipped with BYD’s Blade Battery technology, known for its high safety standards and thermal stability.

Built on Nearly Two Decades of Hybrid Expertise

BYD’s hybrid journey began in 2008 with the launch of the F3DM, widely recognized as the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle. Since then, the company has produced over eight million plug-in hybrid vehicles globally, making it one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the segment.

The introduction of DM-i technology is expected to play a central role in BYD India’s future product strategy. By offering an electric-dominant driving experience without the range anxiety associated with fully electric vehicles, the technology aims to attract consumers looking for a practical transition towards electrified mobility.

Strengthening BYD’s Presence in India

BYD entered the Indian market in 2007 and has steadily expanded its presence from commercial electric vehicles to passenger cars. The company’s current Indian portfolio includes the SEALION 7, eMAX 7, ATTO 3 and SEAL. BYD India currently serves over 14,000 customers through a network of 48 showrooms across 40 cities.

With DM-i technology now set to enter the Indian market, BYD is preparing to strengthen its position in the country’s growing New Energy Vehicle segment by offering consumers a compelling alternative that combines electric mobility, long-distance practicality, and advanced hybrid technology.
