Toyota Urban SUV concept revealed

Toyota has unveiled the Toyota Urban SUV concept, a midsize electric SUV that shares a platform with the Maruti Suzuki eVX. Both models are set for a global debut in production form next year. The Urban SUV concept will be manufactured in India alongside the Maruti eVX, utilizing a shared architecture for economies of scale, including platform, mechanical components, exterior body panels, and interior trim.

Measuring 4,300mm in length, 1,820mm in width, and 1,620mm in height, the Urban SUV concept closely aligns with the Maruti eVX’s dimensions, sharing a 2,700mm wheelbase. Stylistically, it resembles Toyota’s recent EVs, featuring edgy surfaces, C-shaped LED daytime running lamps, flared wheel arches, and a rugged SUV silhouette. The interior details are yet to be revealed, but similarities with the eVX are expected, offering ample space and flexibility.

The Urban SUV will sit on the 27PL skateboard platform, produced in India at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility for both domestic and export markets. The platform will have two battery pack options, with the higher-spec variant offering a range of over 400km. Toyota plans to provide both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) options for selected markets.

In terms of launch, the Urban SUV is positioned as Toyota’s entry-level electric SUV in European markets, with plans for two more electric SUVs, the bZ Sport Crossover and the Compact SUV Crossover. The production version of the Urban SUV is expected to reach markets a few months after the Suzuki eVX hits showrooms in 2024.
