Kia launches the first car accessory made from recycled plastic

Kia unveils the world’s first car accessory crafted from recycled plastic sourced from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Kia Corporation (Kia) has introduced the world’s first car accessory made from plastic recovered from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) by The Ocean Cleanup. This significant development marks a major milestone in Kia’s long-term partnership with The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization dedicated to removing plastic from the world’s oceans. Since 2022, Kia has supported this mission as part of transforming into a leader in sustainable mobility solutions.

Kia has introduced the first car accessory made from plastic extracted from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by The Ocean Cleanup.

One of the key outcomes of this collaboration is the limited-edition trunk liner for the all-new Kia EV3, made using ocean plastic collected by The Ocean Cleanup. This exclusive accessory will be available in select markets in line with the EV3’s launch.

Inspired by Kia’s ‘Opposites United design philosophy, the trunk liner features a ‘geometric wave’ pattern on its top surface, symbolizing the ocean waves and the collection of marine debris, echoing The Ocean Cleanup’s plastic extraction process. Composed of 40% recycled ocean plastic*, the durable and functional liner also includes a QR code that provides details on the product’s development and partnership.

Since the beginning of their seven-year partnership in 2022, Kia and The Ocean Cleanup have collaborated to turn plastic waste from the GPGP into durable, practical products. Given the unique nature of ocean plastic, the material undergoes a rigorous sorting and recycling process to meet Kia’s quality standards.

Kia has integrated recycled plastics into several of its latest models, including the all-electric EV9 SUV, which uses recycled fishnets for flooring and recycled plastic bottles for seat fabrics, and the EV6, which incorporates cloth and matting made from recycled plastics.

In line with its sustainability goals, Kia plans to increase the use of eco-friendly materials in future products, aiming to boost the percentage of recycled plastics in its vehicles to over 20% by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to a circular resource system for ocean plastic.
