The Spirit of Independence Ride (SOIR) once again lived up to its reputation as one of India’s largest and most spirited motorcycle gatherings. This year’s edition saw more than 1,200 riders from Mumbai, Pune, and beyond ride into Lonavala to celebrate Independence Day with the tricolour flying high.
A Flagship Independence Day Tradition
Organised annually by the Lazy Rangers Motorcyclists Confederation (LRMC) since 2019, SOIR has become a cornerstone of the motorcycling calendar. Its philosophy remains simple yet powerful: it’s not about what you ride, but that you ride. From superbikes to commuters, riders of all machines converged in a unified convoy, celebrating brotherhood, freedom, and a shared passion for motorcycling.
Distinguished Guests of Honour
Adding gravitas to the 2025 edition were two esteemed guests. Toshihiro Kaneko, Chief Deputy Consul General of Japan in Mumbai, graced the occasion, reflecting SOIR’s growing cultural and international recognition. Alongside him was Lt. Col. Sohan Roy (Retd.) of the Kumaon Regiment, a respected figure in India’s biking fraternity, admired for his resilience in conquering extreme terrains despite severe osteoarthritis.
The Flag-Hoisting Moment
The emotional highlight came during the flag-hoisting ceremony. Lt. Col. Roy unfurled the tricolour against the backdrop of the misty Lonavala ghats, as over a thousand riders stood in solidarity, singing the national anthem – a moving blend of patriotism and motorcycling spirit.
Strong Industry Backing
The 2025 edition was powered by Gulf Oil, returning as title sponsor for the third consecutive year. Suzuki Two-Wheelers played a major role with strong dealer participation, alongside India Kawasaki Motors, Reise Moto, and other partner brands. Apollo Hospitals Mumbai joined as the healthcare partner, while New India Assurance came on board as insurance partner, ensuring rider wellbeing remained a priority.
More Than Just a Ride
True to its ethos, SOIR 2025 spotlighted road safety with the message #HelmetsSaveLives. Riders also experienced brand showcases, giveaways, and engaging activities, creating a festival-like atmosphere that went beyond the ride itself.
A Celebration of India’s Riding Spirit
Over the years, SOIR has evolved into more than a gathering – it has become an Independence Day ritual for motorcyclists across Maharashtra and beyond. The 2025 edition once again showcased the freedom of the open road, the power of fraternity, and the unifying spirit of the biker brotherhood.
